Dear Jennifer
Smith,
You are a winner! You try to
be the best you can be. You do your part to help your
family and your pals. You're always eager to learn, and
you have your special talents. Way to go, Jenni!
I'm impressed with the
things you do. Your family is proud of you and so am
I. I'm writing to ask if I may spend a day with you
soon in Valparaiso. I have
some safety and crime-prevention tips that I'd like to
share with you and your pals. I'm sure that you can help
me TAKE A BITE OUT OF CRIME.
Your friend,
McGruff the Crime Dog®
Jenni
Smith woke early this morning. She couldn't stay in
bed! Today, McGruff the Crime Dog will be spending the
whole day with Jenni in Valparaiso!
McGruff will also be coming
home with her after school. Jon and
Jason were with Jenni
last night trying to straighten up her room.
There had been a lot of
recycling going on in that room. Jenni
found things that she thought were lost forever. She even
found things she forgot she owned!
Jenni
got dressed and made her bed. She took time to eat a good,
healthy breakfast. She knew breakfast was her most
important meal of the day.
Jenni
was ready when she heard a knock at the front door. She
looked to see who was there before she unlocked the door
and opened it. McGruff was happy to see that Jenni
locked the doors again as they left. "Nice
going," McGruff said.
When they got to the car, Jenni
told McGruff, "I've never ridden in a patrol car
before!" As they buckled up, Jenni
asked, "Can we turn on the siren and lights? Can we
talk on the police radio?" McGruff chuckled.
On the way to school, Jenni
asked, "What's your job, McGruff?" I help people
prevent crime and build safer, more caring
communities," McGruff answered. "Today you will
meet others who also care about you and want to help you
protect yourself."
As they arrived, Jenni
waved to Jon and Jason
waiting at the school crossing. McGruff told her,
"I'm glad your pals know to stop and look for cars.
"You should always look
left, right and then left again to make sure no cars are
coming before you cross the street," McGruff added.
"And always be sure to cross at the
intersections."
Jenni
was delighted to introduce McGruff in class. "Hi,
kids. McGruff here. I have brought a special
crime-fighting sticker for you today."
Jenni
gave them out as McGruff continued, "Use these
stickers to help you remember to TAKE A BITE OUT OF CRIME.
Who knows what that means?" McGruff was pleased when
each person in the classroom raised a hand.
After everyone had a chance
to talk, the teacher told the students, "We are
having a school assembly this morning. We have other
visitors who will talk to us about safety and
crime-prevention tips. Jenni,
will you and McGruff be our line leaders?"
